The Ticket to a Creating a Diverse Reader

Hopefully your children are reading a lot this summer. Are you worried that your elementary reader isn’t reading a good variety of books? It’s very easy for kids to get stuck in that one genre/subject that they really like. If you find that it is nearly impossible for your fourth grade son to read anything but sports books, you will probably find this activity tremendously helpful.

You will need:

  • 5-10 colors of paper or ‘admit one’ tickets (you can pick these up at your local craft store)
  • A hole punch
  • A metal ring or a piece of string

  • Write a different subject/genre on each color
  • Punch a hole through the top of all tickets
  • String together

Whenever your elementary reader reads a book from that genre/subject you remove the ticket. One idea is to offer to take your kid to a movie for each ticket. If that isn’t a big incentive, then pick another activity that they will enjoy (i.e. “for every ticket, you earn a trip to get ice cream”).

By the end of the summer, you should have a more well-rounded reader.
