Cutting Edge Creativity

The Library's CNC milling machine will take your creativity to the cutting edge. Look for inspiration and designs to download on websites like ShopBot or Inventables Projects, or develop your own unique design using the free cloud based Easel software. Save your project into the Easel, bring your blank material to the Library, and watch your creativity take shape!

  • The Library only uses the Easel software to run the milling machine.

 

CNC Rules

  • Users must be at least 18 years old and sign the liability waiver.
  • Users must be able to complete jobs and clean up before library closing time.
  • Objects must not infringe upon any third party's intellectual property rights.
  • Objects must not be illegal nor can they be construed as having the intent to harm.
  • The Library reserves the right to refuse access at the discretion of library staff.
  • Staff does not create, modify, or correct designs for users.
  • The Library is not responsible for machine accuracy or errors.

Some Common Questions

What materials are available at the library?

The Library does not provide blank materials. Suitable materials can be found at home improvement, hobby, and online stores.

How long does it take?

You can estimate the cutting time required in Easel and add 15 minutes for setup and clean up.

What milling bits are available at the library?

The Library provides the following milling bits for you to use:

  • 1/32 inch fishtail upcut
  • 1/16 inch fishtail upcut
  • 1/8 inch fishtail upcut
  • 1/8 inch straight
  • 1/16 inch fishtail downcut
  • ​30 degree engraving bit
  • 1/8 inch spiral upcut
Can I bring in my own milling bit?

Outside milling bits are not allowed. Contact us about your needs.

Should I bring extra material?

We recommend bringing in extra material for testing a design or in case something goes wrong.

Cutting Edge Design

Discover how to design for a computer controlled milling machine (CNC) that can engrave and shape blank wood or plastic by carving out your custom design. Learn how to create designs in the free Easel web-based software and how to operate the library's CNC milling machine. Also learn how to create SVG files to use with the laser cutter.

Participants are encouraged to create a free account before class for Easel.
