“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.” ― Jorge Luis Borges
In her 93 years, Mrs. McCallum served her family, her friends, and her community. Her spark of inspiration gave the Library its first home. When she passed on Sunday, February 24, Mrs. McCallum left a legacy of service that is visible throughout Frisco. Frisco Public Library joins in mourning her loss.
Visitors to the fourth floor of the Library pass by or attend events in the McCallum Room regularly. What they might not know is that the room is named for Mrs. McCallum because she was one of Frisco Public Library’s founders. When she was interviewed for the Library’s 25th anniversary a few years back, she was lighthearted about her contribution.
“…my husband had passed away…and I thought ‘now what are you gonna do?’,” explained Mrs. McCallum. “And I thought, we need a library!”
And so, with hard work and persistence, the Frisco Public Library was born. Mrs. McCallum leased a building on Main Street to the City for $1 a year. She and the other founding members of the Friends of Frisco Public Library rallied together and soon had the library up, running, and offering summer story times.
“Frisco has been forever changed for the better because of Vivian McCallum,” says Shelley Holley, Library Director. “Her spunk, generosity, and vision have blessed our lives.”
Those who met her say Vivian McCallum was a visionary by practice, if not by design. She was the first chairperson of the Heritage Association, was a vital member of the Frisco Garden Club, and, of course, helped bring the Library to town. That her name is spoken with reverence and adorns many placards is simply a side effect.
The Frisco Public Library family is grateful for Mrs. McCallum and for all the joy she brought to Frisco.
