Today kicks off the beginning of this year’s Coral Reef Awareness Week! Coral reefs are amongst the most beautiful and diverse ecosystems on our planet, but they and the myriad critters they house are also at great risk every day due to climate change, pollution, overfishing, and other harmful human activities. In the spirit of enjoying a beachy summer season, let’s take some time this week to appreciate the reefs around the world and help do our part in keeping them safe.
To start, here are some tips recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, opens a new window:
- Take care when on vacation! If you’re diving or snorkeling around reefs, avoid touching them directly.
- Choose your SPF mindfully. Some ingredients in sunscreen are not the most reef-friendly, so it’s always good to do a little extra research before making a purchase.
- Recycle and throw away trash in bins so that it does not end up in the sea!
