Holi – the Festival of Colors

Holi is a vibrant spring festival in India that celebrates color and light. People enjoy this festival by lighting large bonfires and tossing colorful powders on one another. Known as the Festival of Colors, it embodies themes of family, forgiveness, and renewal.

The Holi festival symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and is rooted in the story of the virtuous Prince Prahlad, who defied the cruel King Hiranyakashipu and overcame the evil witch, Holika.

Holi is a time to indulge in traditional sweets like Gujiyas. Gujiyas are sweet dumplings made from a dough of all-purpose flour and ghee, filled with a rich mixture of milk solids, nuts, and sugar. These dumplings are deep-fried until golden brown and are often dipped in sugar syrup for added sweetness. Another specialty of Holi is Thandai, a sweet and spicy milk-based drink that is prepared and shared among family and friends.
