It’s the most fun time of the year! Summer! During summer you can expect a couple changes to the library, most notably Rexy’s glasses, and an increase in guests in the building. Have some questions about summer at the library? Never fear…here are some FAQs that might help answer them.
What is the MSRC and how do I sign up?
MSRC stands for Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge. Guests of all ages can sign up online, log the minutes they spend reading, and earn different prizes. To sign up and log minutes you’ll need to create a ReadSquared account, opens a new window.
What specific prizes are available for the MSRC?
Prizes are changing constantly throughout the summer, so we can’t guarantee what will be available when you have earned your prize. Here are some general ideas of what the prizes include:
-
- Babies and toddlers: beach balls, rubber ducks, bubbles
- Kids: buttons, fidget toys, slap bracelets
- Teens: key chains, stickers, buttons, craft kits
- Adults: automatic entries for a chance to win book bundles!

-
Children 0–5 years old:
The program I want to attend is full. Why are there no more spots?
- We strive to welcome as many guests as possible at our programs. However, capacity may be limited based on various factors, including fire code restrictions (e.g., Monday Mindstretchers, Story Time), availability of materials (e.g., teen programs), or the nature of the program (e.g., Baby Story Time).
Can I leave my child here or do you offer summer camps?
- The library does not provide childcare and cannot act in loco parentis. Children under the age of 10 must be actively supervised by a responsible adult at all times. We ask that caregivers ensure children follow library guidelines, including walking, using inside voices, and keeping feet on the ground.
Can my older child supervise my child that is under 10 years old?
- Any child under 10 years old must be supervised by an adult, which is defined as someone who is 18 years or older.
Why is this book saying it's available, but it isn't on the shelf?
- Summer is a busy time at the library, and our books see a lot of use. Our hardworking circulation staff do their best to keep shelves organized and return items to the floor quickly—but with over 9,000 returns on some days, it takes time. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, it may be in someone’s hands or in the process of being reshelved.
Can you recommend something similar to...
- Absolutely! If you’re looking for something new to read, we are happy to help. We also create staff book lists all year long with great recommendations for items to check out. Click for Staff Lists, opens a new window and then sort by audience.
Can teenagers sign up to volunteer during the summer?
- Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! Our VolunTEEN program is currently full. Applications are expected to reopen in spring of 2027.
The parking lot is full!
- Parking availability can vary depending on the time of day and scheduled events. If you're attending a program, we recommend arriving early to allow time for parking and getting inside. An overflow lot is located at the back of the main parking area, and additional parking is available 0.4 miles away at the courthouse.
How do I get a library card?
- Information on signing up for a library card can be found on our website under the GET A CARD, opens a new window tab.
Do you have any Dog Man books?
- Great question! As mentioned, items move quickly during the summer—some days we see over 9,000 returns! For popular titles, like Dog Man, the best first step is to check the shelf. If you don’t see any copies there, take a look at the blue carts. Sometimes people change their minds and leave books there. If it's still not available, the fastest way to get a copy is to place a hold online, through our app, or with help from staff at any Information Desk.
Can you tell me about the play space?
- Tot’s Town is an interactive play space for children ages 0–5 and their caregivers.
