Make Your Summer Spooky!

Are you tired of the heat of summer? Looking forward to cooler nights and spooky season? You might like celebrating Summerween!

Summerween originated in the Disney animated TV show Gravity Falls, but it has gained popularity in recent years as a way to celebrate spooky season in the middle of summer for those of us who can't wait until October.

Here are some fun activities you might like to do to celebrate Summerween:

  • Make s'mores and tell ghost stories. Summer is the perfect time to sit around a campfire eating a sweet treat and telling scary stories. Check out one of the books at the end of this post for some compilations of scary stories!
  • Play flashlight tag. Wait until dark and then try to catch each other in the beam of a flashlight. If you're lucky you might see some fireflies while you're playing.
  • Make a watermelon Jack-O-Lantern. Carve a face onto a watermelon and then sit it out with a tea light to light up the summer evening.
  • Have a scary movie marathon. If it's just too hot to go outside, stay in and watch a spooky movie. Bonus points if the movie isn't set during Halloween—think The Haunted Mansion, opens a new window, The Witches, opens a new window, and Jaws, opens a new window, or TV shows like Stranger Things, opens a new window
