October is Not Just for Pumpkins

Do you know what else the month of October is known for? Cookies!! Yes, October is National Cookie Month – Yummy!

The cookie has been around for a VERY long time. It was created in Persia (Iran) back in the 7th century (the 600s!) as a way to test the temperature of an oven. These dollops of cake batter were put in the oven to make sure it was heated enough to bake a larger cake. Sugar and spices made their way to Persia and other areas of the world turning these small cakes into much sweeter and sought after treats, known today as cookies.

The word "cookie" comes from the Dutch word "koekje." Before the United States became a country, it was a group of colonies along the East Coast. The Dutch, Scotch, and English brought their versions of the cookie to the colonies in the 1600s. These were first called "tea cakes" (the British word for cookies), but as time went on, the word cookie became part of the American English language.

Various countries have their own word that means cookie:

  • Italy – biscotti
  • India – kuki
  • Spain/Latin America – galleta
  • China – kooke
  • Germany – keks
  • France – biscuit

Just to name a few!

As many ways as there are to say cookie in different languages, there are lots of cookie flavors from around the world:

  • Chocolate chip
  • Sugar
  • Fortune
  • Macaron
  • Snickerdoodle
  • Nankhatai
  • Shortbread
  • Meringue
  • Rugelah

Though the chocolate chip cookie is the number one flavor in the United States, the best selling cookie worldwide is the Oreo! Whatever your favorite cookie may be, we can all agree that these small cakes of flour, butter, sugar, eggs, spices, and other add-ins, are mouthwatering and tummy pleasing!
