And now, onto the podcasts!
One of my favorite podcasts is Too Scary, Didn't Watch. This is a podcast for those of us (like myself!) who are often too scared to watch scary movies but still want to know what happens in them. The hosts, Emily Gonzales, Henley Cox, and Sammy Smart, take listeners scene by scene through classic and new horror movies, as well as share trivia and facts about the actors and production. For adults.
Jaklyn said she and her 8-year-old love Ahway Island. This podcast has two different shows—Be Calm on Ahway Island, which contains calming stories and meditations to help kids unwind, feel safe, and drift into sleep. The other show is Adventure on Ahway Island—a mystery-filled, serialized story for curious minds that’s perfect for car rides, after school, and active listening. For kids.
Megan's favorites for kids are Circle Round and Wow in the World. Circle Round adapts carefully selected folktales from around the world into sound- and music-rich radio plays for kids. Each 15 to 25-minute episode explores important issues like kindness, persistence, and generosity. Each episode ends with an activity that inspires a deeper conversation between children and grown-ups. Wow in the World is a science podcast for kids that shares the most amazing stories in science, technology, and new discoveries happening in the world around us. For kids.
She also mentioned one of her favorite podcasts for adults is The Diary of a CEO. Hosted by Steven Bartlett, this podcast focuses on interviews with some of the most influential people, experts, and thinkers in our world. It embarks on a curiosity driven journey to discover untold truths, unlearned lessons, and important insights to make the listener's lives more enjoyable, successful, and fulfilled. For adults.
Jen really likes Ologies by Alie Ward. This podcast takes a deep dive into very specific fields of study. Recently she listened to an episode all about Pteridology—the study of ferns. This podcast is a great way to learn about the natural world. For kids, there is also Smologies, by the same creator. These are shorter and edited versions of the episodes so that they are appropriate for kids. For adults and kids.
Lauren's favorite podcast is How Did This Get Made? It's a comedy podcast hosted by Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas. They will often have other comedians or actors on the show like Nick Kroll, Nicole Byers, and Daniel Radcliffe. They watch bad (but usually enjoyable) movies and talk about them. The movies range from stuff like Space Jam to Twilight to Fast and Furious. They love a good Gerard Butler or Nicholas Cage movie. For adults.
Hannah enjoys Conan O'Brien's podcast—Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend. It's a comedy/interview podcast with a different guest each episode. Hannah said the podcast is always very funny and makes for a good commute listen. She enjoys the diversity in guests and getting to hear stories from different artists, actors, comedians, and writers. For adults.
Marissa loves the podcast The Magnus Archives. It's a horror podcast about an archival team at the Magnus Institute, a place dedicated to collecting and studying things that are weird and strange. The team slowly finds their reality further and further entwined with the stories they are archiving and the very real, very sinister powers behind them. As a podcast it does a great job at creating an audible horror atmosphere, tells some truly spine-chilling stories, and builds an intriguing plot over the course of the series. For adults.
Both John and Lee mentioned If Books Could Kill as one of their favorite podcasts. This podcast reviews popular self-help books that are often sold in airport bookstores. The hosts do a deep analysis of the books and usually come away feeling the books are not helpful or give bad advice. John said, "Their comments are funny and insightful and I definitely think more critically of books like this than I used to." For adults.
Another of John's favorites is Criminal. Of course, how can you make a blog about podcasts without mentioning the true crime genre! This podcast focuses on the lives of people caught up in crime. Sometimes it focuses on the victims, sometimes the perpetrators, and sometimes both. The stories are very human and compelling, and if you have any interest in true crime you should definitely give it a try. For adults.
Sunita loves the podcast Family Road Trip Trivia. She learned about this podcast from a library guest! She said she loves this podcast because she loves trivia—"it’s a great way to keep my mind active, strengthen cognitive skills, and fuel my curiosity." She also mentioned the podcast The More You Know, The Better it Tastes, which highlights local cuisine and the behind‑the‑scenes world of chefs and restaurateurs in South Texas. For adults.
