3D Printing, and Make it “Fancy”

Learning new tech doesn't have to be daunting. Use this handy guide to learn crucial steps of the 3D printing process at Frisco Public Library. If you're not a fan of designing with Tinkercad, no worries! Free 3D files can be found online, including the file used for today's project: delicate, baroque scrollwork to decorate a book cover.

Step 1: Prep with Cura

Upload and Adjust. Upload your chosen file to Cura, opens a new window and use the program's tools to flip and/or adjust size as necessary. The software even shows a simulation of the final print.

Settings for Success. Use the Library's settings guide at Preparing 3D Print with Cura., opens a new window These steps will spare you the disappointment of a lopsided, warped or fragile print.

Slice. Press the blue "Slice" button. When complete, carefully read the message in the lower right corner. It will give you valuable information on how long your print will take and its weight in grams.

Save to Disk. Save your file to a FAT32-formatted, opens a new window USB drive, then you're ready to reserve your reservation spot in the Makerspace.

Step 2: Make Your Reservation

Reserve Your Spot! Go to Reserve 3D Printers, opens a new window.

Select Your START Time. When you click your starting time on the green blocks, it will look like you've only booked 30 minutes. That's not enough time for most projects.

Select Your END Time. Click the expanding window and review the available options. Add at least 30 minutes to your printing time. After you click "Submit Times" you'll enter that all-important weight (in grams!) you learned from Cura.

Step 3: Printing Time

Check In. Bring your USB and photo ID to the Level 2 Information Desk. Carefully review the 3D Printer Safety rules, and read the instructions at Operating Ultimaker S5, opens a new window. Remember: only adults may use the equipment.

Step 4: Remove & Enjoy Your Art

Scrape It Off. When your print is finished, it won't just slide off the printer plate. You'll need one of the tools to gently shimmy under the print and carefully scrape it off the glass.

Decorate! Finally, use the glue of your choice to attach your prints to your book cover. Beautiful and functional!
