You keep picking up books and nothing is holding your interest. Or worse yet, you haven’t picked up a book in weeks. The dreaded reading slump has struck! So, what do we do? How do we choose books when this happens? What if the next book you pick doesn’t live up to your expectations or disappoints you? Here are some practical tips on how to get over a reading slump!
- Don’t overthink it. While this is easier said than done, it does make a difference. If you get in your head too much, then you won’t enjoy anything! Pick what you’re most excited to read and see what happens. You could also read an old favorite. There’s something so comforting about reading a book that you know what happens. This may be just the thing to get you back into reading!
- Not every book is going to be five stars. This is the sad truth about the reading life. While it would be amazing if every book, we picked up was perfect for us, that just isn’t possible. So, if you know this going in, it may help the fear that’s holding you back.
- Dump a book you’re not enjoying. I’ve found that one of things that will get me into a book slump is forcing myself to finish a book I’m not enjoying. While this may not be something you are used to, if you’re trying to get out of book slump, try it for a little while! It’s not worth it to struggle through a book that you aren’t enjoying just to check it off a list. Life is too short to not read what you enjoy. I promise you’ll be much happier.
Reading slumps are a normal part of the reading life. While it’s always a bummer when it happens, just know that it too will pass. Sometimes you just have to ride out the wave of slumpiness. But you will bounce back!
