A lot of assisted living facilities are interested in how they can use the library to enrich the lives of their residents. While it is more challenging to take full advantage of the library if your residents have limited mobility, there are things that can be done so they have access to our materials.
The library’s digital collection is a great place to start. Frisco residents have access to our Libby service that has eBooks, digital magazines, and downloadable audiobooks. eBooks are especially great for people whose vision isn’t what it used to be, since the font can be enlarged. For those who prefer current events, the library also offers digital access to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post for free.
You might not be aware, but each library account can check out up to 100 books at a time. This could help if your residents prefer physical books but can’t make it down here to pick them up. A staff member at the facility could get a library card with us and check out books for the residents. To make it easier, you can place up to 20 books on hold at a time. So, if you don’t want to come in and find the books yourself, just place holds, and when they are ready, come pick them up at the drive-through or inside from the holds shelf. You can also pick up and drop off books at our book lockers located at the Stonebriar Centre Mall and the Frisco Athletic Center.
If your residents are interested in starting or joining a book club, we have some options for that, too. If they can get to The Grove at Frisco Commons, we have a book club for seniors called Classic Readers. If they want to join a virtual book club, we have Reader’s Choice and Undead & UnRead, which both offer a Zoom meeting option. If they want to start their own book club, we have our Book-Club-in-a-Box kits. These kits have 5 books of the same title as well as facilitator’s questions. You can learn more about them here, opens a new window.
Finally, if any of your residents are already visiting The Grove, they are offering bus rides to the library 3 times a month. If your facility has its own transportation, you can drop people off at the North side entrance and pick them up later, so they don’t have to walk so far.
As you can see, the library has a lot of options for our guests who are in assisted living facilities. I hope this has been helpful. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have questions or need help.
