These days a lot of people are finding the need for education outside of the University. It can be a great way to beef up your résumé or learn new skills to get that next promotion. A lot of people don’t realize that the library can help with that. We offer several services that have basic and advanced courses to help you learn new skills. Especially technical skills. Take a look at the list below and get started.
LinkedIn Learning, opens a new window
This is a video-based learning tool. Think of YouTube except that everyone on this site is a verified subject matter expert and has a posted syllabus for what you will learn in the class. It started out focusing on digital photography and computer topics, but since being acquired by LinkedIn, they’ve really expanded their offerings beyond that. You can also earn certificates and add classes that you complete to your LinkedIn profile.
Gale Presents Udemy, opens a new window
Udemy is very similar to LinkedIn Learning. It’s a video-based learning tool that focuses on business and technical skills. You can also earn certificates and list them on a résumé. However, the specific classes and instructors are different, so it’s a good idea to look at both and see which one works better for you.
Gale Online Courses, opens a new window
Gale Courses is a text-based learning system. It’s more structured than the first two. You read the lessons, take a test after each lesson, and there is a live instructor you can ask questions through a bulletin-board system. Each course is six weeks long, with two lessons each week and college professors teach them. You will get a completion certificate if you pass the final test. Keep in mind that it isn’t self-paced. You need to complete the tests in the allotted time, or you will be dropped.
Mango Languages, opens a new window
Mango just teaches languages, but it teaches them well. There are dozens of choices and there is even a module to learn English if it’s not your primary language. It uses a combination of seeing, hearing, and speaking, to get you started on a new language.
