Take a Hike

By FPL_LibbyM

Fall in Texas is the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors. There are so many fantastic outdoor activities to partake in around North Texas, but hiking is one of the best ways to appreciate our slowly approaching fall weather. Why take a hike? It's free, it's great for all ages, and according to the National Park Service, hiking has numerous physical and mental health benefits. This includes everything from improving heart health to lowering the risk of stress, anxiety, and depression.

Hiking is also the perfect way to learn more about your local environment! The image that hiking typically conjures is mountains and massive fir trees. Hiking in North Texas may look a little different, but it is hiking, nonetheless. We may not have the tallest trees, but our Blackland Prairie ecosystem is full of amazing plants and wildlife. What will you see on your hike? A soapberry tree, a red-tailed hawk, or maybe an armadillo?

Before you head out on a hike, don’t forget these tips:

  1. Find a trail. Lucky for us, Play Frisco has an excellent page with all the trails in Frisco. This page has trail maps, length, and information about each trail:  Play Frisco: Trails., opens a new window
  2. Be prepared. Sunscreen and bug spray are necessary. Consider your timing as well. According to the parks website: “All parks open 30 minutes before sunrise and close 30 minutes after sunset.” Snacks and picnics are great but don’t forget the age-old hiking adage: “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints”.
  3. Learn more. Seek, opens a new window and iNaturalist, opens a new window are two fantastic apps that can identify plants, animals, and bugs. Best of all, they are both free.
  4. Read more! Here are some books to get you ready for the trail.
