Reading outdoors is a great activity because it allows you to explore the world, connect with nature, and get lost in a book. Below are a few tips to make reading outdoors more enjoyable.
Choose the Right Spot
Find a comfortable and quiet spot where you can relax without distractions.
Consider shade to protect yourself from direct sunlight, especially on hot days. Some of my favorite places to read outdoors in Frisco include:
- Kathy Seei Park (formerly Central Park), opens a new window
- Hike and Bike Trails, opens a new window
- Frisco Commons Park, opens a new window
Bring the Right Materials
Depending on location, you might bring a portable chair or blanket for seating. Of course, using the benches and tables at a park is fun, but some of the activities in those areas can attract insects that can be distracting when reading.
Bring a hat, sunglasses, insect repellant, and sunscreen to keep yourself well protected.
Stay Hydrated
Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, especially on warm days.
Avoid beverages that could attract insects.
Mind the Lighting
Ensure you have adequate lighting if you plan to read during the evening under the stars. Consider an LED light that is red or yellow in color as these attract fewer insects. You might be surprised to learn that you can get a small portable red light booklight!
Be Mindful of Noise
Choose a location away from noisy areas to enhance concentration. While the low hum of playing and talking in the background is my preference when reading, you might want headphones if you're sensitive to ambient sounds.
Take Breaks
Take a break by appreciating the surroundings. Stretching and moving around keeps your brain active and gives yourself time to reflect on what you’ve read so far. Feel free to move from location to location. Some readers think of the moving as a break when they move to a new location, other readers think of the stopping to read as the break when they change locations.
Respect Nature
Be mindful of your surroundings and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Follow the Leave No Trace, opens a new window principles and clean up after yourself.
Stay Organized
Use a tote bag or backpack to keep your reading essentials organized.
Keep track of your belongings to avoid leaving anything behind.
Consider Audiobooks
Consider listening to audiobooks with headphones to keep the experience personal and avoid disturbing others. It is a great way to walk, hike, and explore while reading. The Frisco Public Library has an awesome collection of downloadable audiobooks, opens a new window that you can listen to right on your mobile device.
