Frisco Public Library takes pride in celebrating the rich diversity and cultural heritage that shapes our community. From September 15 to October 15, we join the nation in recognizing National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans. This month offers the opportunity to explore the deep influence that Hispanic and Latinx people have had on the arts, sciences, politics, and more.
Why September 15?
National Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15 because it’s the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Shortly after, Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18. The timing highlights the shared histories of many Latin American nations and their journey toward independence.
The Importance of Hispanic Heritage Month
The contributions of Hispanic and Latinx people in the United States are immeasurable. From pioneers like labor leader César Chávez, civil rights icon Dolores Huerta, and Nobel laureate Gabriela Mistral, to today’s cultural innovators such as Lin-Manuel Miranda and Justice Sonia Sotomayor, their impact is deeply felt across many fields. National Hispanic Heritage Month provides a moment to not only honor these figures but also recognize the everyday contributions made by millions of people across the country.
How You Can Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Year-Round
Hispanic Heritage Month is a great start, but the celebration doesn’t need to stop on October 15. By reading works from Hispanic authors, attending cultural events, learning about the history of Latin America, and engaging with your local Hispanic community, you can help foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for this vital cultural heritage.
