Welcome to Adapted Story time

We’re excited to offer Adapted Story Time, a sensory-friendly version of our Family Story Time designed to support children with sensory needs. Like Family Story Time, we’ll share books, movement, songs, and smiles—but with a few changes to help make the experience comfortable and supportive for neurodiverse children and their families.

How Adapted Story Time Works:

  1. Stop by the Youth Desk to ask for Adapted Story Time tickets. Tickets are available an hour before the program begins—while supplies last! Everyone needing a ticket must be present.
  2. Next, line up along the glass doors of the Story Time Room. It is the room with a green dinosaur on the door. Please park your strollers along the glass doors before entering the room.
  3. We will open the doors 5 minutes before the class starts and collect your tickets!
  4. Please find a spot on the floor to sit. There will be cushioned seating available, designed to meet the sensory needs of our attendees.
  5. The Story Time presenter will begin the class with a hello song. Participation is strongly encouraged!

What Makes Adapted Story Time Different?

Adapted Story Time is created with sensory needs in mind.

  • Designed for children ages 3-8 who have sensory sensitivities, along with their caregivers.
  • Smaller group size to reduce noise.
  • Visual schedules to help our attendees better prepare for the transitions that happen during story time.
  • Dimmer lighting and softer music to reduce over-stimulation.
  • Seating cushions for those who like to wiggle and wobble while listening.
  • Children may move, make sounds, or engage with the story in different ways. Adapted Story Time is designed to support sensory needs, so participation may look different from a traditional story time.
