Maybe you’ve heard of the tabletop role playing game called Dungeons and Dragons and are curious what it’s all about. What is a tabletop role playing game (TTRPG) and how do you even begin to start? Lucky for you, the library has your back!
Dungeons and Dragons has been described as an imaginary game for adults. Truthfully, it can be played by almost all ages! To put it in less poetic terms, D&D is a game based on chance. You roll dice to determine what your character is able to do. Depending on what the situation calls for, you will roll the twenty-sided die trying to get the highest number possible. Sounds simple enough, right? While those are the basics, it can get so much more complicated.
To keep things simple, and not completely freak you out, we’ve created a D&D Kit for beginners or those that don’t want to run a whole campaign. Let’s get into it!
There are two books that are included in each kit. The first book is called One Shot Wonders. This is a book that has what are called one shots, meaning it’s not a whole long campaign which can take months or even years! The one shots are much shorter and can usually be completed in a couple of hours.
The next book we have is the Dungeon Master's Guide, 2025 version. This book will have all the basic rules as well as some of the more complex ones. This is the most up-to-date version at the time of this blog post, which makes it perfect for those wanting to get into playing D&D.
Also in the kit is a set of dice. There are seven dice in total, each with a different purpose. The main die that is used is the D20, the largest die in the kit with twenty different sides. The goal is to roll the highest number possible and then add any other stats or abilities which can be found on the character sheet.
There are three character sheets in the kit as well. Character sheets help you keep track of your character's stats and hit points. You will create a character, and the type of character you choose will determine what perks you have. Do you want to play a rogue? Then you’ll be great at sneaking. Do you want to play a cleric? Then your healing skills could help save the party. There are so many options to chose from! Be sure to chose wisely. While each character type does have its own perks, they may have disadvantages as well.
Last, we have a resources page. It includes basic rules and tips for the Dungeon Master (DM) and players. Be aware the language is PG+ and may not be appropriate for children.
Our kits are perfect if you are new to D&D or even an experienced player. Check them out and let your imagination run wild!
